CLARK
COUNTY DESERT TORTOISE TRANSFER AND HOLDING FACILITY |

Caring for over 1400 captive
tortoises in holding at the facility. This
project involves feeding, monitoring, providing
medical care, tagging, implanting with passive
intergraded transponders, blood testing,
transferring to USFWS approved research,
adoption and public education entities,
and collecting data for ongoing research.
Operating a countywide desert tortoise hotline
and pickup service collecting over 1100
tortoises annually. (2/93 to present) |

SNEI
is contracted to operate and manage this
Bureau of Land Management research facility.
This project involves working with researchers
from the Smithsonian Institute, the San
Diego Zoo, U.C.L.A., Drexel University,
and the University of Florida. Out project
responsibilities include caring for over
600 desert tortoises in holding pens ant
the conservation center, feeding monitoring,

care, tagging, implanting with passive
intergraded transponders, blood
testing, transferring to USFWS approved
research entities and collecting

COUNTY DESERT TORTOISE TRANSLOCATION STUDY |

|
Working
with biologists from the United States
Geological Service (USGS) and the University
of Nevada, Reno to conduct a large-scale
study of desert tortoise translocation.
SNEI is currently responsible for the
preparation of and release of 1200 tortoises
per year to the Large Scale Translocation
Site near Jean, Nevada. Responsibilities
|
|
include blood testing,
affixing radio transmitters, tagging,
notching, implanting passive integrated
transponders, burrow construction,
release, radio telemetry tracking,
GPS, GIS and database management.
